Planned power outages – what you need to know
In order to carry out work safely on the electricity network we sometimes have to turn off the power.
While no restrictions apply to the days of the week or times of the day that we can schedule an outage, we try to choose times that are the least disruptive to the majority of people or least disruptive to the most energy-reliant customer affected.
If an outage will mostly affect residential customers, we try to schedule it on weekdays between 9:00am and 4:00pm. If it’s mostly going to affect commercial customers we try to schedule it outside of business hours or at one end of the business day. We also try to avoid affecting schools during term time.
Our aim is to provide at least two weeks’ notice of any planned shutdown to allow customers time to make arrangements for their particular situation. If your electricity connection will be affected by a planned shutdown you will receive a card in the post with the shutdown details on it. This card is sent to the postal address that is registered for the affected connection.
What happens if a shutdown is postponed?
In case weather or a network emergency prevents work from going ahead we always schedule an alternate date for the shutdown.
Network Tasman’s contractors make the decision based on whether the job can be done safely in the conditions present on the day. This means the decision is usually made on the morning the shutdown is planned. If the weather forecast is particularly bad, the decision may be made the day prior. Some jobs can be done in the rain, while others cannot.

What happens if it takes longer than expected to restore power?
We provide our best estimate of the time required for the work to be safely completed. However, sometimes things don’t go to plan. Unforeseen factors can arise that affect the power restoration time. In these cases our contractors work to restore supply as quickly as possible.
We realise outages can be inconvenient but they’re necessary from time to time to keep your electricity network safe, reliable and fit for purpose.
Network Tasman’s lines charges will decrease from 1 April 2019. This is good news for almost all consumers as it means the average residential customer’s lines charge will fall by $3.50 per month (including GST).

Two new stations to fill up your car are being built in the region but there won’t be a drop of fuel in sight. Rather than the traditional petrol and diesel pumps, the two stations in Takaka and Nelson will be pumping energy.
